Nem's Island Treasure Hunt

This year we proudly present our time-honoured treasure map contest... with a twist!

This time, each player may enter up to two contests; the long and the short game. The short game begins now: simply select a grid reference (from A1 to L20) on the map below and post your choice on this thread.

Players may only select one grid reference each and, as usual, may not select a reference already posted by another player.


The twist?

Each grid reference corresponds to one or more riddles, puzzles or questions, which the player must solve correctly to claim a prize. Most of these are original puzzles designed specifically for this contest and each of the 240 grid references leads to a completely different puzzle.

The puzzles will be revealed on Christmas Eve, as links on an upgraded, interactive treasure map. The deadline for selecting a grid reference for the short game ends at 11pm Syrnia Time on 23rd December, the night before the interactive map is released.

NOTE: In the short game, you may only attempt the puzzle that your grid reference leads to on the map

Some of the challenges on the map are longer and harder than others, but the longer and harder challenges gift more valuable prizes. Players shall have until 11pm Syrnia Time on 28th December to complete their respective challenges.


The Long Game

Anyone can compete in the long game, regardless of whether or not you selected a grid reference to compete in the short game.

The long game begins in earnest on Christmas Eve, after we release the interactive map of Nem's Island. To win the long game, you must correctly solve any 30 challenges of your choice. You'll be able to surf each of the 240 puzzles on the interactive treasure map and choose which ones you feel best-suited to attempt. However, you should note that completing 30 quick and easy puzzles will gift a much smaller prize than completing 30 long and hard ones, so choose wisely! That said, you'll have to complete all 30 puzzles with few or no mistakes to receive a prize. Players shall have until 11pm Syrnia Time on 6th January to submit the answers to their 30 puzzles.


How To Submit Your Answers

For both the short and the long game, you should submit your answers via ticket to the Forum department. In the long game, please make it clear which specific grid reference each of your answers pertain to (e.g. A1, G4, C5...). Also, please send all your answers to the long game puzzles in a single ticket.

For certain puzzles, such as crosswords, you may find it easier to use a single Print Screen image to display your successful completion of the challenge, which you can upload quickly to http://prntscr.com/, instead of typing out the solution to each individual crossword clue.

If identical or near-identical entries are sent in by different players, only the first entry will be accepted!



General Hints

1) Some of the puzzles will require knowledge that you can research on the Internet.

2) Some of the puzzles will require knowledge of Syrnia that you can research on www.tlgrounds.com.

3) It's a good idea to work on and discuss tough puzzles with members of your clan or other Syrnians. You won't get penalised for working as a team!

4) Don't waste time trying to Google the answers to the riddles; all have been specifically designed for this competition.



Contest Summary


The Short Game

1) Pick a grid reference and post it on this thread before 11pm on 23rd December.

2) Wait till the contest website address is released (on Xmas Eve).

3) Go to the contest website and click on the link corresponding to the grid reference you chose (so if you posted G4 on forum, click the link that says "G4").

4) Complete the puzzle that clicking on your link reveals, then send the answer in a ticket to the Forum dept.

5) Wait until after December 28th for a chance to receive a prize.


The Long Game

1) Wait till the contest website address is released (Xmas Eve)

2) Go to the contest website and complete any 30 challenges of your choice (click different links to see what puzzles are on offer and answer any 30 out of a possible 240).

3) Send answers to all 30 puzzles via ticket to the Forum dept.

4) Wait until after 6th January for a chance to receive prizes.

Long Game
If you want to play the Long Game, you must attempt any 30 puzzles of your choice, then send your solutions on one ticket to the Forum department. Please specify the grid refs of each of the 30 puzzles you've attempted.

PLEASE NOTE: Grid references have been doubled or trebled up to accommodate more players. Therefore 'A1/M1/Y1' is the puzzle you must attempt if you chose either A1 or M1 or Y1 as your grid reference for the short game. These doubled and trebled links all count as just one puzzle.

Also best not attempted when fighting!

Is there any bonus for doing all 240 in the long game besides showing that we really have no life besides Syrnia?

On the treasure Hunt, we have to do 30 puzzles? What happens if I send 50? Only the first 30 will count? Or how?

I dont know how many are corect. So...can I send 50 ? (a great chance of having 30 corect in those 50 sent)
And also, if all 50 are corect, do we get more prizes?

Long Contest Prizes



Scoring System (Accuracy Multiplied by Difficulty)

1) Accuracy

Fairly good (more than 4 puzzles wrong) = 2
Good (2-4 puzzles wrong) = 4
Very Good (fewer than 2 puzzles wrong) = 6
Almost Perfect (part of 1 puzzle wrong) = 8
Perfect (no mistakes) = 10

2) Difficulty (general difficulty level of puzzles attempted)

Easy = 2, Quite Easy = 4, Medium = 6, Medium-Hard = 8, Hard = 10

Please note that the following criteria were also taken into account when calculating Accuracy/ Difficulty scores:

1) Whether the player sent in more than 30 puzzles
2) The range of puzzles attempted (e.g. whether they were they all pictures/ all maths/ all riddle puzzles)
3) The fullness of the answers given
