Combat
Combat can be split into 4 categories - Attack, Defence, Strength and Health.
You can select the option to train/fight from the city menu of an appropriate location.
You will notice that in the combat screen there is a drop-down list box with these options in it.
The one you select is the aspect of your combat skills that will be worked on when you train and fight.
Certain islands/caves like Exrollia, some locations on Serpenthelm and Arch Caves have auto-attacks, which means there will be a creature waiting to attack you on arrival in town.
After you kill that creature you will be able to have normal access to the town.
Before you practice in combat, it is recommended that you have armour and weaponry (see Smithing), and also some food to heal yourself (see Farming and Cooking).
It is also advised that you have a house to store items (see Construction).
Details of the 4 combat skills are given below as well as details on where you can fight/train:
Attack
Attack is the combat skill that increases your chances of dealing the maximum damage possible to creatures/enemies and also increases average damage.
Building up the Attack skill also lets you wield better weapons. A table below summarizes:

Defence
This combat skill allows you to take less damage from creatures/enemies and allows you to wear better armour.
Remember that the better your defence level and the armour that you wear, the less damage you will take.

Strength
Strength increases your maximum damage. The higher this is, the more you have the potential to inflict damage. This usually goes with the "Attack" skill for best effect.
Health
The more health you have, the longer you will be able to survive in battle. Your health can be replenished with food.
Combat level
Your combat level is a global representation of how much of a warrior you are. Use it as a measurement of how you compare with certain creatures/enemies.
For example, if your level is 4, don't go fighting a level 10 creature otherwise you may just get killed!
Speaking of which, you will end up in Sanfew, minus anything you were carrying if you die.
If you are a pirate and die you will return to Crab Nest not Sanfew.
The items below can only be acquired after exchanging a Desert arena medal with 1000 gold at The Battlemage Arena at Kinam or Toothen.
The ability to equip these items (weapons and armour) is determined by your combat level.

Battle:
When you enter a battle, you will be shown the battle window. The timer will start counting down. At the end of the timer, both you and your opponent will exchange hits. You may do damage and also take damage. You may also miss or not be hit at all. This is called a "Round". After each round, you have the chance to eat items of food to recover lost health. The battle continues and both Player and monster go through Rounds until one of them is defeated.
If you win the fight, you will gain combat experience in the skill you choose to train in the drop-down box in the combat screen. You may also receive items that the monster has dropped. However if you are not so lucky and the monster kills you, all inventory items will be dropped on the ground where you died, for other players to potentially take, and will be brought back to life at Sanfew, or if you are a pirate, Crabs Nest.
Outlands Combat is different. There is a large grey window in the centre of the screen. This shows all previous battles at that location. To the right of this, is a list of any players at this location. It will always show yourself at that location, however if someone else is at the same Outlands location as you, their name will be displayed. This will show their name, their Combat Level and Health Points. You then have the option to Attack them using the "Attack" button. You will then strike at that player. The defender will automatically retaliate. There is no timer, it is all about clicking the "Attack" button. If you need to heal, you must go through your inventory and eat food from there, so make sure you have an organised inventory. If a player kills another player, the loser is sent back to Sanfew or Crab Nest, lose all their items at that Outlands location and will usually be sent a message telling them who killed them and at which location.
Creatures:
Some of these creatures may be used in Invasions, where they will give you 25% extra exp*, some of them are Invasion only creatures which are marked with ** and may be generated by an Orb
Group Fight Creatures are marked with a * and have a cut off point to stop people entering the fight after others have done all the work.
